I enjoyed Hei La Moon, recommended on Chowhounds for its dim sum. A big hit for the quality of its food and the entire experience! Tues. at 1:30 the place was pleasantly busy, patronized entirely by Asians. I asked if I could order tea other than Jasmine. Yes, they had many varieties, and I chose tie guan yin (so-so quality). The Chives Dumplings were delicately crispy and plump with shrimp. Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf contained moist sausage and chicken chunks, and pieces of egg. I tried a dessert I was unfamiliar with, Yellow Bun. Baked and slightly sweet, it had a custard inside; the owner later told me that some Yellow Bun has an egg filling.
The wait staff were very pleasant and were delightful in trying to navigate the language barrier with me. The owner answered my culinary questions. When I left about 2:30, food carts were still being pushed around for newly seated diners, unlike at CCC one weekday when the carts disappeared by 1:30.
Hei La Moon is at 88 Beach St.right across the xpwy. from the Chinese arches on Beach.
PS: Just curious -- does anyone know why dim sum orders usually come 3 pieces per plate?
