There have been a couple of posts recently about the demise of BBQ in Southern CT, a trend which I likewise bemoan.
But I realized just now that I've been getting my BBQ fix from a place most of you probably don't know about: a cart parked outside Yale-New Haven Hospital.
Every day (or maybe every weekday), a fleet of these carts pulls up, representing cuisine from all over the world. Much of it is pretty good (like the Eritrean food from Lalibela), but my favorite is the guy who brings the big grill/smoker on wheels, doling out ribs and chicken with rice and slaw on the side.
Technically it's Caribbean jerk cooking, but it's an excellent proxy for traditional American BBQ -- the meat is usually moist and flavorful, and the sauces appropriately tangy. Plus it's cheap -- about $5 for a bigger-than-lunch-sized serving.
Hope some of you can find it and let me know what you think. Happy eating.
