Gumbo Cafe!

bacalao | Apr 5, 2004 09:49 AM

Tried the Gumbo Cafe (new place on 107th and Columbus -- right across from "A") this weekend. Phenomenal meal! I can't say I'm the world's expert on gumbo, but it was excellent. They have different variations of gumbo and jambalaya (seafood and sausage, non-seafood, vegetarian, and a few others, i think), along with other options like rice and beans with sausage, a muffuletta (sp?), and others. The best part, we found, was that they have a sampler option. I got two half mains (a gumbo with everything and the jambalaya) and a side (collared greens), and my wife got a two half mains plus a side, too (she got the non-seafood gumbo and the veggie jambalaya, with steamed spinach). For $10, the sampler was a perfect portion, and all six of the things we had were excellent. We also somehow found room to share a lemon meringue tart ($3.50), which was also great.
It's currently BYOB, but there's a wine store right down the street. And it's small -- probably only 12 seats total. Their takeout menu has a website on it, but I tried to check it out to attach the link and got nothing.
This place will definitely get a return visit from us as soon as Passover is over and I can go back to eating rice again.
