So I went there this weekend with a friend and his vegan sister, and my assessment is worse than the previous reviews.
First of all, it was a major problem that NONE of the options on the menu were vegan. NONE. Secondly, when we asked about the vegan options, the waitress flat-out lied. She suggested that all the dishes had vegan equivalents, with completely different ingredients and preparation. Not true: they were the vegetarian dishes with the dairy taken out. No substitution or anything.
This, as you can imagine, made for painfully dull dishes. My "Red Bean Soup with Many Deceptively Descriptive Words," sans the creme fraiche, was basically a bowl of beans. I forget what lengthy name they gave my entree, but it was basically tomato sauce and veggies. It doesn't matter, because there were only three entrees, and we ordered all of them. Something with a long name that tasted like a day-old quiche. Something with a long name that was basically veggies on a plate. None of them were interesting. At best, it was something you could get at Herbivore; at worst, it was on par with microwave food.
And for this grand pleasure, with wine pairings (which weren't crap, I guess), we paid $90 a person, or many times more than a meal costs at Herbivore.
I realize that meat eaters like me are less likely to appreciate vegan restaurants, but that doesn't explain why I'm so fond of Millenium, which actually IS a vegan restaurant (no dairy!), and actually IS worth the money, at least for vegetarians. Heck, even Herbivore hits the spot on occasion. Greens is exactly the sort of bland meal that wary meat eaters are afraid they will have at vegan restaurants. The fact that this meal happened at a waterfront restaurant filled with poshly dressed diners makes the whole experience slightly ridiculous, like a derisive cartoon on the wall at Memphis Minnie's.
I guess the service was okay, and the ambience is nice. But ugh, even if you're vegan, I advise you against visiting.
