I don't know how else to put it!
I used to live in Manhattan but it's been years. Will be with a British transplant who's lived in the U.S. a long time on the West Coast. We've got access to Vegas restaurants and L.A. so that's the background.
I was trying to think of any fabulous Manhattan restaurants (or even bars) that are left that also have a great view. Either that or if there aren't really any, just some wonderful New York warmth and glitz and experience. On the food, he's probably going to like some intricate wild game dish or interestingly-put-together entree (even molecular gastronomy would be OK) over a great simple steak. He likes French. It doesn't have to be French though. By fancy I think (goodness, hope) he means kind of hip and fun, and not fidgety-fancy.
So far Charlie Palmer Aureole is looking like our top billing from just a quick look-around. But we haven't been studying up so what do you recommend? There are just so many good choices it's easy to get swamped. (Gramercy Tavern is booked that night and 11 Madison Park is closed that night.)
Thanks for any recs.
