We searched the board and selected Salang Pass in Fremont for dinner last Friday night. None of us knew anything about Afghan cuisine. We arrived around 9 PM and still had to wait 20 minutes for a seat. The place was packed with mostly Middle Eastern looking people. Half of the restaurant has normal tables and the other cushions and low tables. Happily we got one of those. We ordered three appitizers Borani Badejan, a pumpkin dish which was wonderful and a exquisitely flavored hummus. Each of had a differnent main dish. One had extremely flavorful Tandori Chicken, another an eggplant dish and a third a mixed shish-kabob. Of the latter the steak was only steak but the grounded chicken was mixed with some sort of spices that gave them a wonderful flavor. But the star of the night was my Quabili pallow. It was brown rice with raisins and carrots on top of a lamb shank. The rice was so moist with an indescribable flavor that I might not have missed the lamb. But I would have because the meat fell off the bone. We had two desserts and the total for four came to $75. I lived in Turkey and have traveled to North Africa and Jordan and I will tell you that this was the best Middle Eastern food I have ever eaten.
