There are so many things that seem to distinguish great barbecue from mediocre, and they are all present at Riverside in the Brown's Ferry community, near Georgetown, SC.
This small BBQ place is so out of the way that you do need a GPS or good directions to find it though.
Linda and Erven Jones do it the old-fashioned (real) way starting with whole hogs that are wood-smoked slowly. Erven the pitmaster cooks twice a week in new stainless steel pits in a meticulously clean smoke house.
Erven (a dedicated Dallas Cowboys fan) makes fantastic pulled pork, with the right balance of smokiness and chew, neither dry nor too wet. The pulled pork is so good that we've brought home another pound to eat after both our visits. He also has awesome cracklings to take home for a couple of bucks a bag.
Ms. Linda always has half a dozen traditional BBQ sides. On our last visit she had butter beans and okra, cabbage, mac 'n cheese, and collards. Her sides compete with the 'q for top honors.
As if the great food weren't enough the proprietors are so friendly and attentive that you feel like you know them both after spending five minutes at Riverside. It's clear that they love what they do, and that pride extends to everything else I saw at Riverside.
If you love great, real wood smoked, whole hog pulled pork, marvelous sides, and the friendliest people around you should visit Linda and Erven at Riverside.
