Pomir Grill on Shrewsbury Street is worth a try. This small, family-run BYOB is serving up carefully-prepared and delicious Afghan food. If you've ever been to the Helmand in Cambridge, you'll feel right at home when they bring the flatbread with three great dipping sauces -- I can't get enough of the coriander sauce. The mantu and aushak are fantastic thin pastas stuffed with beef and spinach respectively, served with one of two sauces. Beef short ribs are meltingly tender, served with a really nice qabili palao -- rice with raisins and carrots. The spinach and (especially) eggplant, available either as a side or main dish, are wonderful. Grilled lamb, chicken, meatballs, and squash dishes plus some soups round out the modest menu.
Everything's cooked to order by chef mom in the kitchen, and brought to the table by one of her daughters, so the pace is leisurely. Chef comes out afterwards to make sure you enjoyed everything. Thanks to the BYOB the bill for a very satisfying meal of apps and mains is less than $25 per head.
I've been there twice and had great meals -- but not many other folks were there. I do hope Worcester supports this place.
