Thanks to N. J. Chowhounds for suggesting Grand Shanghai to me, as an lunch meeting spot for our Hackensack friends to meet us, from Philly.
Here's my report. Sadly, I felt reluctant to order from the fascinating menu, or ask for even more authentic Chinese dishes not on the menu. (We were splitting the check) Our foursome all ordered from the lunch specials. Soup was ordinary, but mains were quite good, as was the Spring roll and veggie fried rice. Not bad for $5.95.
However, this place was the real deal--my idea of a destination restaurant, in terms of authenticity. The guests were all Asian--a very good sign, as was the printing of luncheon specials in Chinese only, on the table in little cards. The food being eaten by these customers looked marvelous to me, but I did see food that I could not recognize.
Decor was lovely; service gracious; sound level was very quiet. I look forward to returning.
