Good news/bad news for goat fans in Wilmington

Although Wilmington is usually not thought of as a haven of immigrant cuisine, there are certain bright spots in the otherwise white-bread culinary landscape. Sadly, I went by one of them yesterday to find it closed permanently: Gabay's Hot Pot, on Lancaster Ave. just west of Greenhill, is no more. This Jamaican favorite was my best (and only!) source for goat curry. But, as luck would have it, I scored an equally fine stewed goat meal right across the street at my other favorite place, Pilipino Grocery and Take-Out at 2801 Lancaster Ave. I stopped in yesterday for my periodic fix of home-cooked Filipino buffet, and what do you know, she was serving a goat stew along with the rest of the usual delicious offerings. (Maybe Gabay was selling off the contents of his freezer before he closed down?) I also picked up a container of beef-and-greens soup and a fresh-made lumpia, which is a sort of a Filipino spring roll, vegetables wrapped in a paper-thin crepe. I highly recommend the Pilipino Grocery for all your Filipino food needs and hope they get enough business to avoid the fate of their Jamaican neighbors!
