Hey, Chicago chowhounds. I'm a lifelong New Yorker moving to Chicago in just over a week. I'm looking for a good place for general grocery shopping, with a wide variety of ethnic, "gourmet," and regular ol' items. If you know New York, you will know Fairway which claims to be "like no other market." Well, is this true, or can anyone recommend something like it in Chicago?
If you're not familiar with Fairway, they have an excellent cheese department, with a lot of artisanal cheeses not available elsewhere, extensive produce selection including reasonably priced organics, fresh bread, high quality (Callebaut and so on) chocolates, I could go on... The best thing is that they have a lot of private label items (olive oil, spices, and so on) that are decent but much cheaper than name brands.
So, what does anyone recommend? Oh, I'm gonna be in Rogers Park, so if there's something good on the Far North side that would be the best.
