We took a foliage roadtrip yesterday (it's still at the beginning stage) and ended up in Harpers Ferry. Since we couldn't find any parking in HF (the railroad station lot was full and we weren't interested in driving a mile to the visitors' parking lot and taking the bus back into town), we turned around and drove back to the adjoining little town of Bolivar and had lunch at the Canal House Cafe. The lunch menu is limited but I can't get their delicious and very creative sandwiches out of my mind. They make their own wholegrain bread and it's very good. My husband's sandwich was squash, feta and walnuts (he's always been adventurous) and it was wonderful. My sandwich was ham, Swiss cheese, a garlic-y mayo and a spicey mustard with some kick, that I had grilled (and it wasn't a greasy grilled sandwich either :) which was also delicious. We didn't have dessert but they also make their own (they were getting pumpkin pies out of the oven when we arrived). Anyhow, this is just a heads up if you're hungry while in the area and don't want to deal with the hassle of the crowds and lack of parking in HF. The Canal House was built in the 1820's. The restroom is on the second floor (up a very steep, narrow staircase, typical of those old houses).
