good breakfast in Hilmar (off 99, central valley)

Just tried breakfast at a little coffee shop in nearby Hilmar,CA(just over into Merced county). Under new ownership & re-named "The Nutty Tree" it is located at 8322 N. Lander Ave, (we took 99 south from Modesto area to Turlock & took the Lander Ave. exit) & out to Hilmar. It's a small place sharing the parking lot with the nearby grocery store. I ordered the pancake sandwich ($4.99) & was quite pleased with it. Pancakes (2) were made from a Honey-Wheat mix & were huge, filling my 10" plate. Choice of regular maple syrup, (sugar-free on request) & a simply delicious apricot syrup. The accompanying scrambled eggs & 2 strips of bacon were ordinary, but good. My companion (who is quite a fan of chicken-fried steak), ordered the chicken fried steak special ($5.99) with eggs over easy (perfect), cottage fried potatoes & a biscuit. The chicken-fried steak was the best we've tried in the central valley--by far! Trust me, my companion has eaten a lot of not up to par cfs. The gravy covering the steak was tasty, & not as white & insipid as country gravy can often be in coffee shops. The cottage fries were fresh, brown & crispy. The biscuit was ordinary & did not come with a little bowl of gravy to pour on top (would have been nice). No jelly offered for the biscuit either. Coffee was good & fresh, but only refilled once---after quite a wait. Seemed to be just one waitress on hand & one cook, there were 4 tables in use while we dined. Nice, friendly atmosphere---will try lunch sometime soon. Oh--they're open from 6:00am--2:00pm, seven days a week.
