i stopped in GOBO for early dinner tonight. its the new veg-only place on 6th avenue at 8th street. my verdict is that it is a nice yet typically somewhat odd vegetarian restaurant.
i had a salad and seitan skewer dish. the salad was toothsome with grilled tofu, escarole, radicchio, orange wedges, frissee lettuce, pignole nuts and raisins. the bad thing was it was served on a flat plate instead of a bowl so it was a lot of work to catch those little pine nuts and raisins. no reading and eating with this salad. bonus points for the dressing, which was carrot/ginger i think but especially for how it was used (sparingly).
the grilled seitan skewers were ok fine as you can imagine, but the two spicy curry and garlic side dips for them were just excellent and turned it out. i had hot temple of health cinnamon/ginger tea to drink but they have lots of options including smoothies and wine too.
the place is very nice looking inside. the staff is over eager and at your table too much, oh i know thats not so bad. however, they have an open kitchen and the ventilation is not real good yet so the whole place stinks when ever they cook or clean. yes i mentioned it.
GOBO has about 50 menu items several of which i'll go back to try like ginseng spinach noodle soup or malaysian curry stew w/ papaya&coconut rice. lastly, i noticed that the to go menu style looks just like REPUBLIC's menu i wonder if they are related restaurants anyone know?
