Glory Be - Great Indian food on the UWS

A new Indian restaurant, Swagat, has opened at 411A Amsterdam Ave, bet 79th and 80th St. (Tel 212-362-1400). So far, I've only ordered take-out(5 times), but I have been increasingly ecstatic with each and every delivery. This is NOT your typical 'curry house.' The cooking is subtle, yet intense in flavor. Real care goes into the blending of spices - and there are preparations I've never seen in the city before. Swagat reminds me of the Indian restaurants I enjoyed in London, years ago. There are some wonderful Southern Indian dishes on the menu, such as: Dal Tadka (yellow lentils); Hyderabad Bhagare Baingan - baby eggplant stuffed with spices and coconut milk; and some chicken and lamb preparations using green chillies, ginger, fresh curry leaves, crushed black pepper, etc. A Mulgutwanni soup of lentils and herbs is amazing and the Lukhnawi Shammi Kebob puts a whole new spin on minced lamb and lentil cakes. The food is 'delicate' - NOT heavily fried or "curried." (Though if you wish to have the most incredible fried bread in the city, try Swagat's Poori - just like they do it in England!) For dessert, my sister tried the Kulfi (ice-cream) and its creaminess was out-of-this-world. I haven't eaten "in" yet, but the place looks very nice. (Quite small). Delivery service is very efficient and relatively fast. I hope Swagat 'keeps on doing whatever they are doing' - because they are 'doing it RIGHT!' What a delight to be able to enjoy such a feast in my 'backyard' - the Upper West Side! (I hope my UWS neighbors will give this place a try and support it. It's definitely a "Chowhound" kinda place.)
