The wife and I went to the new Glacier in Manhattan Beach (Sepulveda between Marine and MB Blvd.) last night. Overall, I was very impressed. They have about 15 or so flavors of ice cream and gelato, all made in house. They also had a handful of frozen yogurt (hard-pack, not soft serve) and sorbet flavors.
I tried the gelato... half bittersweet chocolate and half strawberry. Very tasty. More creamy and ice-cream like than other gelatos I've had. The texture was good and the flavors were great. I judge a gelato place by their fruit flavors. On my first (and only) visit to Crema Dolci in Redondo, I tried their banana gelato, and it tasted like fake banana extract... like the old banana slurpees of my youth! But the strawberry at Glacier was fantastic.
My wife is watching her cholesterol intake, so she got the Valhrona Sorbet. A big thumbs up... it tasted like a bowl of Fudgesicle for grownups!
The ambience inside was nice... lots of seating. Eating outside is possible, but there's no seating and the building is right up against Sepulveda, so there's quite a lot of traffic noise if you do. Clientele was typical Manhattan Beach... teens and parents with young kids.
The only negative mark from me... no free water! Every good ice cream shop should have a water fountain, or a water cooler, or just a pitcher with cups sitting out and available. I always crave a cup of water after eating good ice cream...
But I can't really count that against them. A big thumbs up for Glacier. Next time I will be trying their ice cream...
