Garden Deli Cafe - the perfect sandwich

I am thinking that everyone knows about this place in Half Moon Bay because it has been there so long, but since I don't see it on the board ...

This is a place that does one thing and does it well.

Garden Deli bakes it's own bread - French and whole wheat - huge square loaves that they hand slice into 1/2 pieces for sandwiches. The bread is baked in the morning and when they run out, they close down.

They offer about 8 types of sandwiches. IMO the best is the roast beef. It tastes like it's baked there and not the deli type. Really tender and tasty. Almost like pot roast. All sandwiches come with Half Moon Bay butter leaf lettuce, sweet thin slices of red onion, a tomato slice that tastes like a tomato, a dill pickle, mustard and mayo. $5.00 for a whole sandwich. $3.00 for a half.

I had not been there for quite a while and wondered if it was still good. It is. The wall is covered with awards from the local paper. It has won best sandwich for the last 10 - 12 ... well, as long as it has been open.

The bread is to dream about. A chewy buttery crust. The whole wheat has a touch of honey it seems to me.

They also have ham, salami, smoked turkey (pretty fine also), tuna, egg salad and some veggie versions. Seating is outside in the garden or on the deck.

It is located in the San Benito House
356 Main St
Half Moon Bay
Open every day from 11 - 3.
