Stopped in The Garden Bakery on Albion Street in Mendocino yesterday on a whim. Never heard of it. Everything was incredible. Hard to decide what to order.
We had a German pastry. Savory and filled with cabbage, onions and ground beef. It tasted a little sourdough-y. The texture was tender and toothsome and the savory filling was perfect. I can't remember the name because I never saw the way it was spelled and the owner didn't know. She learned to make them from her grandmother.
Tried a cinnamon roll with cream cheese frosting. Perfect. Doughy and sweet, but not too sweet.
Also had a berry pastry with cream cheese filling. Flaky and tender and just the right proportion of pastry to cream cheese to berries.
Other things that looked great were the fresh hot crepes with apricot filling, big fat brownies, rum bundt cake, sticky buns. Everything really.
I wish we had something like this in San Francisco. If we do and I don't know about it, please let me in on the secret.
