My husband and I have been looking for a good Japanese hibachi restaurant for about a year now. We took our kids to the one in Epcot last year and they loved the "chop-chops", as they call them.
We tried Sakura in Ellicott City and it was terrible. Ginza in Timonium was even worse. The food was flavorless and the service horrible. In fact, at Ginza, I gave the waitress a bottle of sake and asked her to put it on ice. She brought back a 16 oz tumbler (TUMBLER) filled with my sake on the rocks. Oh my God, if I had drunk that I wouldn't have found my way to the door.
Last night we tried Fuji Japanese in Towson (right next to the Recker Theater). Everything about it was excellent. The service was wonderful (they brought the kids balloon animals) and the food was incredible...very, very flavorful. One other thing that I liked was the fact that the table around the grill was twice as wide as usual. Plenty of room there for drinks, appetizers, and so on.
And, speaking of appetizers, if you go, don't miss the shrimp toast. I've never been a big fan, but the Sun paper's review raved about it. This time, they were actually right. It was plump and crisp and completely greaseless. It will definitely become a standard.
So, I'm happy to report that I believe we've found the chop-chop place we were looking for.
