First time New Orleans trip coming up this weekend for a lifelong yankee. I'm dying to have some incredible culinary experiences, hopefully within walking distance or very short taxi cab ride away from where I'm staying (the JW Marriott at Canal and Chartres). Degustation at August, lunch/brunch at Commander's Palace, and beignets at Cafe du Monde (expectations are that this will be more touristy sideshow than culinary revelation) are on the list.
Now, I'm wondering about where to get the best fried chicken and raw oysters possible. Where, oh where can I find my food kryptonite in The Big Easy? Please help!
Also, do locals eat down in the area where I'll be (or is it purely the refuge of tourists, like the LV Strip)? If so, what are the best "blue-collar" locals joints nearby?
