Went to Frascati on Russian Hill tonight. I was surprised at the quality and variety of the food.
First course we shared: figs in balsamic vinegar with gorgonzola and prosciutto on not a bruschetta, but a toasted bread - just enough to dip into the extra sauce.
Entrees were hangar steak with (I'm not sure what type of) mushrooms - not white - more of a tree mushroom type. with a great balsamic sauce, yellow potatoes (the small ones), onions - meat done perfectly mr.
Friend had halibut - meaty piece over gorgonzola polenta with "melted fennel" and some other greens - spinach? arugula?
dessert was a really great bubbly blackberry and stone fruit cobbler with vanilla bean ice cream perfectly melting on top - a hefty serving.
Wine - fine - a Barbera -
I was surprised since there are so many so-so neighborhood Italian restaurants. This was really great - great energy too - not so Italian that we felt alienated - not so packaged that we felt rushed.
