The Fox/The French House Dining Room

I was saddened to hear last night that the owner of the French House Dining Room has decided to close this fine restaurant above the pub in Soho and is changing it into a wine bar. Although it was always packed, just having 12 tables meant it was not making enough profit.

The good news is that the manager of the Dining Room has teamed up with the people who run The Eagle gastro pub in Farringdon Road and they have opened The Fox in Shoreditch ( just off Curtain Rd ) on the same principles.

I went there for an impromptu supper last night and while the service was amiable but shambolic ( much like The Eagle ) the food was very well prepared and well priced. Starters included Potted Shrimp which was a bit bland and a duck liver terrine which was thick and meaty. We both had roasted quails for main courses which were cooked perfectly and served with wilted swamp spinach with pine nuts which was a little too over oiled with Sesame, but very tasty.

Two courses with a bottle of Espiga came to £44 inc service.

They were not too busy but apparently have been packed to the rafters most nights. I think they will be a welcome addition to Shorditch and Hoxton where there are now hundreds of places to eat but very few good ones
