Fountain Cafe, Pt. Townsend

I happened to spend an unplanned evening in Port Townsend over the past weekend. My wife had heard that this small place had been featured on the Discovery Channel as some sort of "Best of..." so we tried it. Only later did I find that Discovery had indeed named it the best cafe in the *state* in September.

We found it lived up to the nascent hype. I had paella of local fresh seafood and my wife had the minted rack of lamb. We shared a dinner salad and the roast garlic/cheese/salsa fresca appetizer and enjoyed a Semillon-Sauv Blanc Bordeau-style WA blend. Coffee and a ginger creme brulee had us waddling out the door for under $100.

Judging from eating our dishes and reading the others, I can't say that there is anything groundbreaking or adventurous here. The wine list is short (and inexpensive--our white was the second-most pricey on the list at $34).

But the "smile" factor here is tremendous, the setting oddly perfect, and the food here outstandingly good. I am not easy to please, and this backstreet gem left me with absolutely nothing to criticize.

Apparently, Pt. Townsendites have been shushing about Fountain Cafe, keeping it to themselves, for about 10 years now. Bastards.
