I always get excited when a new restaurant opens in Chinatown, even if it merely replaces an existing one. While Chinese residents started seriously moving into Monterey Park almost 50 years ago, Chinatown was still the dominant Chinese food area in Los Angeles well into the 1980s and I remember those times well. Latest entry in Chinatown is Fortune Gourmet Kitchen which replaces the short lived (maybe 6 months) Friendly Seafood, a location best known for hosting Sam Woo Seafood, upstairs in the building formerly known as the Food Center. Food here is fairly decent, typical Hong Kong seafood menu, but not earth shaking, which is the most you can expect in Chinatown these days. Good choice of lunch specials. They use the street address of 727 N. Broadway, #215, even though the restaurant fronts on Hill Street.
