Wow, just have to say thank you to all the hounds for the reviews, feedback etc....about eating in NO. I have never eaten so well or been treated so nicely then when in NO for a week! Amazing time and amazing people, so let me give back a bit with a trip report...next time I will take more notes and more pictures so I can give more details, but I'm not used to having to report back on so many good meals in a row!
Cafe Amelie, we started with the shrimp and grits, which were really good, and got comped later by our waiter since dinner orders were so backed up. For dinner DH had the lamb burger which he liked, but I thought was a little dry, but good flavor, pretty spicy actually. I had the fish of the day which was good, I believe trout...again, should have taken more food pictures....
Saturday was jazz fest so we stopped first at Willie Mae's for fried chicken, which did not disappoint! I loved the beans and rice side as well as a really good cornbread muffin, but found the Mac and cheese disappointing. Needless to say, we didn't eat much at jazz fest...
Dinner at Coquette started with 2 really good apps, crudo and the fried oysters. Never had anything but raw oysters so that was a nice surprise. Dinner was hanger steak and pork, the pork had 2 preparations which were delicious.
Emerils for dinner. I had called to get an earlier reservation and as luck had it we got seats at the kitchen bar which I didn't even know they had, loved siting here! We started with the andouille sausage and boudin and the BBQ shrimp, both were delicious. I actually think I preferred the shrimp here vs Mr B's. Dinner was the swordfish for DH and I had the crawfish pasta which was delicious. For dessert I had read about the banana cream pie so DH ordered a piece, I am not a huge banana pie person, but this was delicious! Service was excellent as I had read. And actually service pretty much everywhere we went was really good, NO knows how to take care of people very well!
Luke for dinner with some friends, one who had just been and raved about it. We shared starters of crawfish boudin, not what I pictured, but really good. Also the flammekueche was very good. Raw oysters for the table, wow they were huge! Glad I tried them, but must say I prefer the NE salty / briny. For dinner I had the shrimp and grits which I loved. Dinner was a birthday so we had the steamed chocolate and the bread pudding, which was outstanding!
Mr B's for dinner, which I was only going to do for apps of BBQ shrimp at hounds advice, but coworkers wanted to do dinner. This was probably my least favorite place, but that said, we still had a very good meal. A couple of quirks, we got an order of truffle fries, and had to send them back as they were luke warm, the new batch was outstanding! Also, a few of us got the gumbo ya ya, and when they brought out the cups there was a thin film on top and you could tell they had been sitting a bit....we didn't return as we had just returned the fries, but I was disappointed by two oops in a row....next the BBQ shrimp, which were good and I dipped lots of bread into, but I still think I preferred Emerils. Dinner was shrimp and grits, which our waiter warned us was a sweeter version. It was good, but my preference goes to Luke's. We skipped dessert and headed to Cafe du Monde as a couple still had not tried the beignets. I was stuffed, but there was no way I was passing on those, outstanding!
Oh, almost forgot we had lunch earlier in the week at Central Grocery and split a muffelata at the counter with a cold beer. Wow, that was a good lunch! Thanks for the directions on the store , sandwich size and waiting in line. I wished I had stopped here on my way to the airport, as there is really nothing there, and after all the good food this week, I was stuffed, but not yet ready to go back to reality....
Last night in town we just played it by ear and wandered in to NOLA before it got to crazy and Jazz Fest crowd wandered in, but by the end of dinner that's what happened and we were glad to get out of there. I prefer the feel of Emerils, but we had another good meal. Co workers wanted the wedge and veggie pizza to start, not my first choices but both very good. For dinner I had the garlic crusted drum, my first experience with drum, and it was delicious! Also had my fist Sazerac, good, smooth, but not sure if I would order it again.
Pralines at Southern Candy, didn't love the originals but I did get one chocolate and some coconut which I preferred. My favorite though were the sea salt tortues, so good!! I tried to get some on my last night to take home but they were closed....I may just have to pay the shipping and indulge in a box, that's how good they were!
There are so many more places I wanted to try, and or repeat, so I am looking forward to my next trip. Thanks again to all the hounds!
