Non-food Overtones at the 2nd Ave. Deli

I remember that a while ago, Jim said that he wasn't into 2nd Ave. Deli b/c of "non-food" tastes in the food. He later explained that he meant that the food didn't taste quite clean or something like that. I tried to ignore this b/c I really do like their food.

Well I'm sad to reportthat on Sat. I witnessed something that I found pretty gross. While getting take out, I saw one of the countermen wipe down the counter with a none too clean looking cloth, gathering up a lot of scraps, drippings etc., and then toss the cloth behind him as he turned to pick up some bread. The cloth landed not on the counter, but right in the tub of chopped liver. When I pointed this out, he merely grunted and plucked out the cloth, without skimming off the top of the chopped liver or anything.
Needless to say, I switched my order to pastrami.

Now, I know this is a one-off experience and worse happens at restaurants all the time, but combined with Jim's words (which immediately came back to me), I think it will be a long time before I work up the courage to try it again - I'll be IMAGINING those "non-food" flavors if nothing else...
