Follow up to post re business lunch, patient gracious service at Lucca

I had posted below asking for suggestions for a location for a business lunch near 15th at Capitol. The reponses about Dragonfly were promising, but one of our group nixed Asian (sigh).

So, by process of elimination, we ended up at Lucca, at 1615 J. My expectations were pretty low, based on some old reviews on Chowhound (most recent I could find was 2003), but it turned out not to be a bad choice.

Not that the food was great, but it wasn't bad, especially the smoked pork sandwich and the Salad Nicoise, and the side room was pretty and relatively quiet (in the spring I am sure this is an outdoor area, in the winter they have plastic 'walls' and heat lamps). We were seated right next to the fireplace.

But the real kudos aren't for the food, but for the service, which was extremely well-timed: a particular feat for our party, since we seemed bound and determined to test their patience. I made a reservation for six, only four showed up, one of those a half hour late due to a plane delay, another an hour late, who knows why two just decided to bail....and through it all the service was focused and friendly.

Some of the prior old posts complained about Lucca being a 'pick up'or see andbeseen type of place': well, perhaps at night, but not at all that type of atmosphere at lunch. Posters also said it was extremely noisy. Again: well, the place was hopping, but in no way would I say it was too noisy to get our work done...

and this being Sacramento, I feel obligated to report that the Governor himself came in to lunch partway through our visit. The Governor (along with his entourage)was seated two tables behind us, at a table not nearly as nice as ours :-)

Bottom line: Lucca isn't terribly exciting, even when shared with celebrities and other public figures, but it isn't a bad choice for a business meal either..
