The Royal Guard in the Shippan section of Stamford has been reviewed favorably here and by the Sterns, but I was quite disappointed by a recent visit there. The batter coating on the fish was overly thick and doughy, not very crisp, and pretty flavorless. The fried clams were so well done they verged on burnt. I live in Stamford, and often go to the fish and chips place (name escapes me) on Main in Norwalk, but was hoping to find a substitute closer to home--no way. The Norwalk spot is far superior, a tasty greasathon, when you're in the mood for that sort of thing, and it also sells some quirky British products, which intrigue the kids. I haven't tried the fish at Westport's Westfair (which is a bit too far to go for this kind of food), but based on their fried clams, I suspect theirs is the best of the three.
