Recently ate at Firefly in Framingham and had the standard spare ribs. They kept pushing these supposedly meatier St. Louis Ribs which I am glad I avoided. Someone in my party ordered them and while not bad they were not as good as the spare ribs.
The spare ribs themselves were pretty good. I ordered a whole rack and split it.
Not quite the smokey rich flavor that I usually get at the Blue Ribbon in Arlington or ECG. Both do significantly better ribs. The firefly ribs had a sort of crust on them and really NEEDED sauce. While at BR I always feel the ribs are so delicious you can eat them sauce free.
That said, the BR sauces are so darned good that I usually do some dipping.
Also on the sauce note, thought Firefly claims there sauces have one all sorts of award, I felt that none of them stood up to the BR sauces. Their most famous Memphis sauce (supposedly with chocolate in it) just did not taste right. The Texas sauce had a smokey chipotle taste, but no depth. I did like their NC vinegar sauce which was balanced, tastey and had good tang. In my opinion, the BR sauces win hands down across the board.
As for the Blue Ribbon in Newton I ate there with a friend about a month ago and had seriously mediocre ribs for the first time.
Mostly I eat at the BR in Arlington, but I have been to the Newton local too. This is the first time that I had a problem.
These ribs were just sort of soggy and slightly wet. Almost as though they were kept warm in a steamer or something. I am not willing to truly diss a BR location based on one iffy meal, but these ribs were lame. BR is generally my first choice for ribs.
Anyone else had iffy ribs at the Newton BR lately?
