Someone recently reccomended I try Range, a fairly new place in Santa Margarita just north of San Luis Obispo.
The owner/chef was one of the original owners of Mare Blu in Baywood and also was at the Inn at Morro Bay and some other spots.
Range is a tiny place in a converted hamburger stand. They've given it a slightly western look without crossing the border to kitsch. The menu is interesting with an emphasis on American/California type foods. I had the crawfish cake appetizer which was excellent and then a Niman Ranch pork chop with mashed potatoes. It was moist, tender and flavorful. There were 6 of us dining and everyone was pleased. I recall the lambchops and the strip steak getting good reviews. We sampled a bread pudding and chocolate pots de creme for dessert and both were fine.
The place doesn't take credit cards or reservations but it's worth trip "over the grade" for people in SLO.
