At the Vegetarian Food Fair, one of the chefs in the Iron Chef competition mentioned something called a "ground date." It has a dark red outer skin and a soft marshmallowy centre and is maybe one and a half to two inches long and vaguely egg-shaped or oval. They're not actually dates, apparently, and I'm not sure what the proper name is or where to find them.
Here's a kind of blurry image of the chef holding one up: http://www.flickr.com/photos/iheartmu...
Any ideas? I was told they might be in Chinatown, but I haven't come across them, and Google searches just bring up a lot of hits for ground up dates or date pits.
