Recently, we brought in vegetarian Indian food. For the first time we ordered from Madras Mahal. We loved it. Every dish, even standard appetizers, seemed to have some special spicing or touches. Even their bread (to me, always a necessity with an Indian meal but not necessarily usually special) seemed tastier.
For example, we started with bonda (I think they're called that, I don't have a menu in front of me), which are these fried balls of potato. We expected potato and the usual spices, but, when we bit into them, we found really delicious spicing along with corn, cashews and raisins. Everything (appetizers, vegetable dishes, dosai) was like that -- a little more exciting than expected.
The only sad part is that we live nowhere near the place (Lex. and 27th). I still think I'll make a point of going back as soon as possible. All I've been thinking about since I woke up was digging in to those leftovers.
