just had to start a thread about my two favorite places.
rivoli is a great new american/italian restaurant in berkeley. i think it is definitely on the level of chez pannise, but even if it isn't, all of the entrees are less than $20! portobello fritters, duck two ways, any of the raviolis, and inexpensive wine list are all great reasons to go.
tu lan is the best vietnamese in the city (nuts to slanted door- ages for a reservation, eight dollars for a basic salad?). scary part of town (sixth and market, once saw someone get hit with a snow shovel outside), but the best grub for around five bucks. crowd favorites- shrimp fried rice, chicken salad, veitnamese beef steak, beef stew. anyone have any favorites at this place (i haven't tried 75% of menu because i keep going back to tried and true)?
