The why and where part is very important. Please describe to me the soup, and why it's so good. Tell me where it is.
My favorite french onion of all time is at the Smithville Inn in historic Smithville village, in Absecon, NJ. It's a far drive, so I am trying to find something a little closer to me (Toms River area).
First off the village is freakin awesome. A lot of little shops. Go there during Christmas as they decorate it like a Charles Dickens village. You'll find all sorts of stuff there.. crafty stores, gourmet food/kitchen gadget store, bird supplies, toys, winery, little arcade, candles, antiques, etc, even a punk store. It's on my list of favorite day trips. See some pics here if you've never been to it:
Now about the soup. You don't need to go to the restaurant if all you want is soup. You can sit at the bar if you want. It's obviously got onions and herbs in the broth, but it's also got croutons, three cheeses, and they make their own french fried onions and top it with that. Not sure what else to say, so I'll let the picture speak:
Crappy picture, but whatever.. looks fantastic. Nice big bowl overflowing with stuff.
One place I mean to get is a cajun restaruant that makes Creole Onion Soup. It's lighter, made with chicken stock, white wine, and gruyere. But I've not been there yet.
