Does anyone here have any thoughts about Chemex coffee pots vs. more ordinary methods of making drip coffee, such as a plain old Melitta pot? And perhaps more broadly, about "fancy kitchen stuff" vs more plain-looking utensils?

For the last few days I've been using a Chemex coffee maker I found in storage, instead of my trusty Melitta maker. The Chemex looks really nice. Unfortunately, I don't think it's one-tenth as practical as my trusty, sit-on-the-Flame-Tamer Melitta pot. The Chemex is way too big, doesn't "handle" as nicely--it's more difficult to hold confidently and pour, and seems to me very fragile. And if you have a filter paper full of wet grounds in the top, it just does not pour as readily as the Melitta maker. And it's p[robably 2 or 3 or more times as expensive.

There are lots of kitchen utensils that are similar, in that they look fancy but just are not nearly as practical. Indeed, some of them are downright impractical. (My guess is that a lot of this stuff is purchased by people with lots more money than sense, or than interest in food.)

Anyone have any comments about this?
