Had a trip to Washington DC. Could not get a reservation at Galileo so went to Barolo in the Capitol Hill.
I am not familiar with Washington DC's restaurant scene and did not expect a lot from Barolo based on Zagats 21 rating as opposed to 26 of Galileo although our friends told us that it is excellent.
I was surprised how good it was (what a rare experience after so many disappointments with restaurants in general). Although the restaurant was almost empty on that Sunday, July 4th, night, we had an exceptionally excellent Italian dinner. The food was superb. The décor is wonderful and the service was perfect. The Sweetbreads, black ravioli, steak, Tuna and all other dishes were exceptionally good. The steak was one of the best that I have eaten for a long time. Deserts were excellent as well.
At the end of the meal the waiter told us that the chef was there in the kitchen cooking for us. Based on the quality of the food he did a special effort to please us and succeeded.
Quantities were large. I ate, as usual, a` portion of my wifes dishes. Usually I do it with no problem - at Barolo I hardly finished. We had an exceptional Super Tuscan wine I wrote the name down but have lost the note.
We were so happy that we finished with heavenly Grappa, (Berta Grappa Nebbiolo Tre Soli Tre (45º)). We got extra on the house, what a nice gesture (this Grappa is expensive).
