We enjoyed Evoe the most of any of the food places we have visited so far in Portland and that is saying a lot, so I thought I'd make a start by showcasing it in a separate report about our May trip from Vancouver, BC (more to come later!).
Evoe is next to and affiliated with Pastaworks (you pay your bill there). http://pastaworks.com/pages/about-pas... The reviews that are included on the left hand side in the link say it much better than I will. This is a place to hang out, nibble, chat and relax.
We arrived with the intention of trying a sandwich or two but were enticed by, of all things, the roasted veg options (yes, I passed up porky, meaty goodness in favour of rabbit food, sue me).
The chef, Kevin Gibson, knows his onions, and has no attitude or artifice about that knowledge as far as I could see. It was like sitting in his kitchen and having him and his crew dish up perfectly executed, simple fare just for us.
The camaraderie was obvious and it extended to the customers, known or new. We sat at the bar and watched the action, taking notes about how to recreate the roasted fava beans ($7, 425 degree oven, olive oil, salt, a little something spicy perhaps?) that should be the only bar food served anywhere, and taking in the aroma of the cogollos a la plancha ($9) as the little lettuce heads were charred a bit on the burner of the regular stove in front of us. When I inquired about a cider listed, I was immediately provided with a generous taste.
Hard to imagine a better place to while away an hour or two on a Sunday afternoon. I would have gone back the next day if they were open (currently Wed to Sun only) and I suspect I would be here weekly at least if I lived in Portland.
