Had lunch at Essex Seafood today. Clam chowder was tops - creamy/milky, no flour, nice potatoes, touch of onion and meltingly tender bits of clam. Underlying broth was redolent of clams.
Unfortunately I succumbed to the lobster roll instead of the fried clam plate I should have ordered. The roll was unbuttered and untoasted. The lobster was OK for quantity, not overwhelming, but had zero flavor though it was apparently fresh. Maybe they shucked it a few days ago and refrigeration killed the flavor? Salt and pepper helped, but not enough.
The onion rings were lovely. They really understand how to fry. My partner catchow had the fresh shrimp plate and those were divine. Very delicate shrimp flavor, moist and plump lil' things in the light crispy batter.
