Friends of ours arranged for a group of us to attend a fund raising dinner for Japan Relief efforts at En Japanese Restaurant tonight.The staff donated their time this evening as all had family that had been impacted by the earthquake and Tsunami in Japan.
I had not been to this place since it had moved from Granville to West 10th Avenue in Point Grey and had forgotten how great the food was and how much the food stands out from other Japanese restaurants. It does not fall into the Sushi, Izakaya or Noodle categories. It is truly "modern Japanese" with finer food than the izakayas and not sushi oriented with the cliche flowery "creative rolls".
The six course set menu included:
1) local tuna tataki with curry seasonings served on shiso leave and with cantaloupe
2) assorted maki
3) halibut cheek with blueberry sauce on taro root
4) local crispy kanki fish ( like a snapper) with mushroom and ponzu sauce (this was on an amazingly delicious slow braised daikon)
5) marinated new zealand lamb with Japanese plum sour sauce
6) fruit plate for dessert
The staff were attentive and friendly and rounded our our dining experience.
Definitely an under-rated gem that will be added to our restaurant rotation!
