A local chain I just discovered is Mr. Empanada, a simple place that serves up Cuban sandwiches, Spanish bean soup, deviled crabs, salads, and 7 kinds of empanada: picadillo (or w/cheese); Italian sausage w/cheese; chicken, broccoli and cheese; crab; apple; and guava w/cheese.
The crab empanada was excellent, the crabmeat was of high quality, simmered with sofrito (olive oil, garlic, onion, and green pepper). The empanada pastry is simple, flour-based, with no trace of the peanut oil it was fried in. The picadillo and cheese was excellent, the white american-swiss melting into the picadillo to form a great flavor.
The husband and wife team, Al and Audrey Perez, take great pride in their product and are hoping to expand aggressively in the coming years. I will be going back for more of their pride and joy--- the delicious empanadas. They have three locations, one in west tampa on armenia, one in Carrolwood off Dale Mabry, and one downtown on franklin.
