I took my mom for dinner tonight at this relatively new restaurant in a strip mall off Roe, just north of 107th. They were hoppin' with business, probably because of the recent Groupon. This place attracts a varied crowd, and a few toted bottles, as I don't think they have a license yet. The service is a bit awkward, and the dining room a bit chilly, but we were warmed up as soon as the food arrived.
SO good! I had carne asada, a generous serving of marinated skirt steak with a chimichurri sauce on the side, as well as rice, creamy black beans, sweet plaintain, and a tasty little mixed greens salad with cheese and a delicious dressing. My mom's chicken stuffed arepa wasn't the least bit greasy, and was accompanied by plaintains, rice, beans, and avocado for the combo price. She said her only complaint was that the masa was perhaps a little too lean for her taste, and that next time she'd order the version with avocado and cheese as well as chicken for the filling. We were too full to order dessert, and I still have enough rice, plaintain, and beef for lunch tomorrow. It may sound odd, but the black beans were the star of the night. Just delicious, highly recommended, and how they make them taste so good and yet remain vegetarian? We'll probably never know. But, we'll be back for more.
