The South East corner of 53rd & 9th used to have a
Greek diner that closed last year. A couple of months
ago work started on a new restaurant.
Eatery - Opened up this Wednersday and we dropped by yesterday.
The Decor: Minimalist. Concrete cement floor, brick walls painted over, lots of glass in the front. A seperate bar partitioned off with seperate entrance to accomodate smoking.
Menu: They call it New American - When I queried the manager he said that since 9th Ave had so many ethnic restaurant, they picked one theme'd entree etc. and gave it their own interpretation -- HA !!!!
Appetiser: spring roll - they were soggy. Black mussels which were over cooked and meat leathery.
Entree: I ordered "jerk Chicken" with mango chutney like substance, it was served with mashed sweet potato.
The chicken was boneless pieces of meat with no hint of
spices even close to what I've had in Jamaica, or for the matter in Bklyn ;-(. The waitress commented that it was jerk chicken without the hot-spices. It seems folks do not like hot peppers. My wife ordered braised chicken which was needless to say extra dry.
They have one pasta on the menu called farmers choice or some such.
This being the second day, the service was spotty. i.e
bringing in entree even before we had finished the appetisers. Had to wait long for our dessert (Which I cannot even remember - with a scoop of ice-cream)
Maybe we'll give it another try in a month's time before giving up on the new neighborhood addition.
