I got a flyer for "Curry & Satay Asian Restaurant" at 467 Queen Street West which opened recently so went to try it out. As soon as you walk in you can't help but notice the stale grease smell, but I know the previous restaurent Wah Sun has been there for like forever, so I assume it was a left over and didn't worry too much. The food was unexpectedly good.
For $13 per person on the weekend ($11 weekday) you can order as many dishes from their entire menu as you can eat! (It is not a buffet - the food is not laid out on a table.) With some exceptions like lobster and Peking duck of course. I asked if the portions are small, the waiter said yes, but they are just maybe 1/3 smaller than regular Chinese restaurents, and actually bigger than some "bistro" portions.
The menu is heavy on Thai and Chinese, with 1 page of Malaysian. The Gado gado is totally unauthentic, with broccoli and tofu on top of rice vermicelli, and some julienned cabbage and cucumber. However the peanut dressing is quite tasty (albeit not traditional.) The Thai green curry shrimp tastes fine but the sauce is quite thick, too much cornstarch perhaps? The Garlic Seafood fried rice from the Chinese section was our favourite that night. There are lots more things to try, I'll be back!
