Took the bf to Eastern Standard for his birthday last night, and had a great time. As mentioned before, the place reminded me of Balthazar, though with a dressier feel. The long bar is gorgeous, and I like how they have a separate patio section for lounge chairs and small tables. Not sure if they have a bar menu, but I'd be happy to sit at the bar and munch on their fries all night.
Our server was on top of things, bringing us a nice bread plate soon after we arrived. Fairly basic stuff, but it did include this yummy piece of carrot-zucchini (?) bread. Wish it had been bigger, since I only got a small bite before giving the rest to the birthday boy. I ordered a Jack Rose (after reading Rubee's earlier post), and MAN, WAS IT GOOD. It has officially replaced Union's Pomegranate Martini as my new favorite cocktail. I don't want to bother describing it, because I know I won't do it justice, but it's so good and you must all now go and try it.
We shared the mussels appetizer, which we enjoyed. The pommes frites it came with were delicious and piping hot, served with a little dish of aioli that tasted like it had some of the mussels juice/sauce/soup mixed in. The hanger steak was great (a good size for the $19 price tag), though it was a tad bit too red for the medium I ordered. It was served with more of the frites (so much for the low-carb thing), and some pickled vegetables, which I thought was a nice touch. My bf ordered the carbonara, which we both found to be just OK, though maybe that's because I like my carbonara a bit thicker. Still, the big chunks of crisped bacon were nice, as were the fresh peas.
We skipped the recommended Boston Creme Pie and went for the trio of sorbets. So, so good, though it didn't seem like there was that much on the dish. Last night's flavors were orange (the best), raspberry and watermelon.
The bill came to a little under $100, plus tip, including two Jack Roses (I couldn't resist) and one beer. All-in-all, we really enjoyed our meal here. I'm hoping the prices stay where they are, though I won't be surprised if they go up in the coming months.
