East Bay coffee to rival Blue Bottle

I've recently switched to a coffee bean provider who I believe is even better than Blue Bottle. I had been a huge fan of Blue Bottle (in particular, their "3 Africans" blend) but I was starting to get annoyed when, after 2 weeks in a row, they forgot to save an order for me at the Saturday farmers' market (after phoning in the order), so when I saw a posting on Craigslist for "passionately roasted coffee" from a man named Wayne, I thought that I would give it a try. I haven't gone back to Blue Bottle. And I love Blue Bottle's coffee, but this other stuff is better.

Wayne somehow procures some very special beans, usually from small co-operatives dedicated to sustainable practices, ranging from Peru to Guatemala to Ethiopa. He will roast exactly to your specifications, just before you pick it up, and the beans are vacuum sealed. One 6 oz bag is $6, but a second bag of the same bean at the same roast is only $4 more. While some may consider it an inconvenience driving to his house (right off Broadway at Rt. 24 in Oakland), he is extremeley accomdating. I have woken up on a Sunday morning to find that I have no beans left, sent him an email, and was able to pick up my fresh, custom-roasted beans by noon. The transaction can be a bit strange: you put money in an envelope and slide it through his mail slot, and he has your coffee waiting for you in a box outside. Last time, I found myself humming "Waiting For The Man" by the Velvet Underground.
