Went to Duke's this afternoon for lunch. Had the "Carolina Pulled-Pork Sandwich" with very thinly sliced onion rings and a small cup of coleslaw. I went to Duke's today to give their BBQ a try before I hit the BBQ Block Party hosted by Blue Smoke over the weekend. An easy comparison situation.
In the interest of disclosure, I grew up in the South and have traveled around having my share of great BBQ in Georgia, Florida, South and North Carolina, and Texas.
Granted, I was very hungry upon arriving at Duke's around 1:15 pm this afternoon. I thought the "Pulled Pork Sandwich BBQ" plate was delicious. What I am not saying is that it equalled BBQ I have had at BBQ joints of the past, but it really hit the spot. The fried onion slices were delicious as well. Therefore, in my opinion, should not be totally dismissed when one may have a BBQ craving and in the 19th St. and Broadway area.
Of course, a trip up to Blue Smoke at 27th St. and Park Ave. S will yield a much more delicious BBQ opportunity for a much higher price. After 3 visits, I believe Blue Smoke is well worth it. I am looking forward to the 2nd BBQ Block Party tomorrow and Sunday.
