We had a great dinner at Downtown this weekend. It's on Shattuck near University. Very appealing menu, with really nice raw bar selections including a duo of seafood tartare (tuna with habenero and cilantro, salmon with something), and live scallops with lemon and EVOO). We were not so hungry so we skipped app's, though the warm roasted corn salad sounded good. Service was professional and low key. We didn't feel funny not ordering apps. I had a Hangar (this is the new one made in Alameda I think?) vodka, up, tangerine, wonderful.
I ordered John Dory with pecans in citrus butter, served with pureed carrots with cardamom and sauteed spinach. Loved it. Companion had Chicken cooked under a brick draped over mashed potatoes and surrounded by natural juices. WOW it was crisp and juicy. Entrees are $17 to $20. All come with coordinating vegetables, and there are veg sides available. We didn't have room for dessert.
They serve a bar menu and half way thru dinner Mal Sharpe's band came in and played. Very nice place, very high quality. I don't get across the bay too often, but I noted a BART stop on the block, and will be back.
