I'll be in TO June 15-July 15, renting a condo at Richmond and University.
I lived in the city 1997-2000 and have had many many sojourns there before and since, so I know it well. But one thing that I discovered and fell in love with since moving to Calgary- first on trips to Vancouver, and now thank goodness all over Calgary as well- is gelato.
I was in Toronto for a week over Xmas, and wanted some gelato- I walked on College from my hotel on Yonge all the way past Ossington- nada. Sicilian Sidewalk Cafe is okay premium ice cream but it ain't gelato. I found a place across from ROM where Greg's used to and they had gelato, but it was horrible, old and (if you can imagine) sinewy, like it had been sitting around too long, disgusting, overpriced, and the owner gave me an earful about how TO'ers don't "get" gelato, they had to add cream to their recipes, basically ruining them, and that there was no decent gelato in the city.
I find this exceedingly hard to believe. On Queen, King, College, Bloor... Beaches, Bloor West, Younge and Eg.... no gelato?
Please don't tell me to go to St Claire and Dufferin; I know the stuff is up there, but I'm looking for places that are not stodgy old Italian throwbacks with stracciatella and pistachio- I am looking for modern gelaterias along the lines of Mondo or Bellagio's in Vancouver, Fiasco in Calgary or Pure Gelato in Ottawa.
