Best Donuts: Yeasty Wonders, Betty Ann Food Shop, E. Boston...

It seemed time to post again about Betty Ann Food Shop (open mornings only!, closed on Mondays, 617-567-1479, 565 Bennington St., East Boston)- it is in an unassuming storefront that one can easily miss and pass by- it doesn't look like a bakery but it does smell like one. Their jelly donuts are totally unique- really the "ur" jelly donut, what jelly donuts all should be. They are yeasty- super yeasty- tender, soft, eggy and filled with really good quality dark berry jelly. On fridays they have lemon donuts- oh yes their donuts also have well-cooked confectioners sugar on the outside- they are not too sweet. They are simply splendid- absolutely donuts "to write home to Mom" and everybody else about. They are worth travelling a long distance to get to. For chowhoundies who don't get up too early in the morning, how about going in the morning after you've stayed up all night ( I think they open by 6 am, please check on that)- I believe they may also sell coffee there (but I could be wrong about this- it has been far too long since we've gone to). Apparantly, on Saturdays they also sell baked beans- apparantly, it was a standard thing to have ones sat. night supper's "casserole" of baked beans be baked in the local bakery since they have/had the great ovens for slow cooking for many, many hours. I bet their beans are among the best. Please chowhoundies go- you will not regret! It is truly a special donut...
