Donburi-Ya...what should I order next time?

I've been to this place twice now and while I do not doubt that it has good food--given all the Japanese patrons--I haven't had good luck ordering there. (Full disclosure: I am not at all knowledgeable about Japanese food once it leaves the realm of sushi.) Last week my friend and I had:

1) oyako-don--mildly pleasant but dull, IMO
2) something that was described as seaweed salad but resembled nothing more than seaweed shreds suspended in mucus...did nothing for me
3) stir-fried pork--definitely the tastiest thing on the table, but seemed more Chinese than anything else!
4) octopus buns--edible if you scraped off the icky-sweet sauce on top, but still could not even taste any octopus, just "fried"

I am clearly getting the wrong stuff. I like food where I can really taste the flavors of the ingredients--what we ate the other day did not cut it at all. What's good at this place, or a similar Japanese non-sushi, non-ramen joint?
